"Vande Mataram" is the national song of India, composed in Sanskrit by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on November 7, 1875, and later included in his 1882 novel Anandamath. It served as a vital rallying cry during the freedom struggle, first sung by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896. The song was officially adopted on January 24, 1950.
